OUR CITY
Historical Pfacts
Before Pflugerville had rec centers, car meet‑ups, and trivia nights, it was a small farming town shaped by railroad tracks, cotton gins, and farms. This week, we’re looking at a piece of local history that still shapes our community.
Did you know…
In 1910, just a few years after the town was platted, a neighborhood known as the Historic Colored Addition or Pflugerville Colored Addition was founded on land west of Pflugerville, sold to Black cotton farmers and ice factory workers who were barred from living inside the town limits because of segregation.
Local farmer La Rue Noton sold plots there for about $50 each, making homeownership possible for Black families who were otherwise shut out of Pflugerville’s growth.
St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church was built in the area in 1910 and later built a school in 1928. Once statewide desegregation took place in 1965, the school population moved to the main Pflugerville school.
While in 1978 the Travis County commissioners tried to get the name changed, they couldn’t get approval from the residents to change the name.
Even though the name hasn’t changed, it’s usually referred to as the “Historic Colored Addition” today and sits on roughly 17 acres of land.
Those are the highlights of life in Pflugerville this week!
See you on Tuesday with more local news, events, history, and businesses worth supporting.
Forward to 3 friends who need to stay in the Pflugerville loop. Reply anytime with tips or shoutouts—I read every one.
